2010

SEPTEMBER

A New Orleans principal begins coaching his teachers.

Ron Gubitz attends the Relay GSE National Principal Academy Fellowship where he learns from Paul Bambrick how to effectively coach teachers with Observation & Feedback, Weekly Data Meetings and Action Steps.

OCTOBER

A month later, Ron realizes he has a problem.

All of the paper forms, spreadsheets, and emails he’s using to manage instructional coaching are creating a mountain of data that he can’t wrangle.

NOVEMBER

Ron asks Andrew Cox, the school data guru, to help.

Andrew, a hobby coder, writes the first version of Whetstone on nights and weekends.


2011

JANUARY

Whetstone is born!

Ron and his leadership team use Whetstone for the rest of the school year, providing constant feedback to Andrew who iterates the platform in his spare time.

august

Whetstone launches the ‘11-’12 school year with its first school partners.

10 schools in New Orleans adopt Whetstone.


2013

AUGUST

Whetstone grows beyond New Orleans.

The small but mighty team signs up partners from New York to California.


MARCH

Whetstone’s team grows to 3.

Out of a 10x10 office in the Propeller Incubator in New Orleans, the Whetstone Team works furiously to support its 30 schools.

NOVEMBER

New leadership!

Libby Fischer named CEO.

2014


January

Uncommon Schools joins Whetstone.

The masters of instructional coaching select Whetstone in a competitive process and share their expertise to iterate Whetstone to become even more effective.

August

Whetstone grows 5x.

Whetstone grows from 30 to 150 schools for the 15-16 school year.

2015


MARCH

Whetstone signs its first big urban district.

Washington, DC Public Schools joins Whetstone to manage its LEAP initiative.

AUGUST

Whetstone doubles school partnerships.

Whetstone grows to 300 schools for the 16-17 school year.

2016


January

Whetstone gets a new home.

Whetstone moves to the Handelman’s building on New Orleans’ historic Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.

AUGUST

Whetstone launches its sixth school year!

600 schools are using Whetstone across the United States, Australia, and Africa.

2017


AUGUST

Whetstone signs its 1,000th school!

Denver Public Schools, Tulsa Public Schools, and Pueblo City Schools join Whetstone for the 18-19 school year, along with 88% of all KIPP regions and hundreds of other amazing school partners.

Fall

Full steam ahead!

The Whetstone team, now 13 people, launch the 18-19 school year and are working tirelessly to prepare for 19-20.
